Jack Vettriano (1951 - )

Born in 1951, Jack Vettriano is a contemporary artist with studios in Scotland and London, England. At the age of 16, Vettriano left school to work in a coal mine as an engineer. On his twenty-first birthday, he received a set of watercolour paints from a girlfriend, and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint.

Vettriano sold his first painting in 1988 at the age of 36. Since then, he has enjoyed huge commercial success as an artist. His paintings are simultaneously romantic and thought provoking. Vettriano says of his work, "I paint the world I want to be in."

In 1999, when his first intercontinental exhibition took place in NYC, the work of this Scottish-born artist skyrocketed in popularity. His use of nostalgic 1920's motifs to create romantic settings remains a favorite style with decorators in the U.S. and Great Britain. The Singing Butler is one of these better known works.

While modern, Vettriano's paintings capture the sense of a romantic by-gone era. Dance Me to the End of Love captures the sublime connection between ceremony and courtship. The artist's ethereal scene highlights the gallantry and romance of dancing. Mad Dogs evokes the beachfront ambiance and the carefree strolls of the Roaring Twenties. This painting took its title from British Poet Noel Coward's "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun."

Vettriano's timeless and alluring moments of magic are caught, once again, in the Waltzers. In this scene, men and women grace the romance of the night. In Elegy for a Dead Admiral, even grief is graced with sophistication in the presence of music, dining, light, and water. Jack Vettriano has the ability to allure and captivate viewers in these timeless settings of romance. His paintings will continue to court and romance viewers for many, many years to come.
