Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 - 1986)

Georgia O'Keefe is the first American woman painter to gain unanimous respect from critics and the public. On a large dairy farm in Wisconsin, Georgia O'Keefe was born in 1887. O'Keefe said she was aware of her calling to be an artist at a very early age and was able to receive private art lessons. She continued her studies, with a year spent at the Art Institute of Chicago and one at the Art Student League in New York City.

O'Keefe spent several years in teaching positions at various colleges. Eventually, she found a position that allowed her the time to paint and began to paint as she felt, not as she was taught. In 1916 some of her work was shown to NYC gallery owner, Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz was impressed and promoted her work for many years to come.

O'Keefe's work captures the essence of a subject, in spirit and form. In the 1920's she created many of the abstract flower paintings that have endured in popularity. Blending abstraction with representation in works such as Red Canna and Red Poppy, O'Keefe created a dynamic, new synthesis she called "memory" or the "dream thing".

O'Keefe's art distills a spiritual quality, born of her striving to land the visions that rose in her mind. This luminous quality of space that is interpreted in her paintings is elegantly articulated in Oriental Poppies, 1928 and White Rose with Larkspur No.2.

The mystical, wide open-country side of New Mexico called her spirit and she worked between New York City and New Mexico for many years. The New Mexico landscape became intense subject matter for much of her work, as seen in Black Mesa Landscape/ Outside of Marie's. She moved to New Mexico, permanently, in 1949.

The Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art both did retrospectives of her her work in 1943 and 1946, respectively. Then, two widely traveled shows in 1966 and 1970 established O'Keefe as one of the most highly regarded artists of all time. Georgia O'Keefe continued to paint and enjoyed great success as a painter until her death in 1986.
