Claude Monet (1840 -1926)

Born in 1840, the French artist, Claude Monet, is best known for vividly capturing light and atmospheric conditions within landscapes. Monet's use of bright colors and lively brush strokes inspired a new school of painting that came to be known as Impressionism. The famous Impressionists took their name from a painting by Monet called Impression: Sunrise. The painting depicted light shimmering on water and was exhibited in 1874.

The dappled play of light with landscapes, florals, gardens, oceans and water, remained a central theme of Monet's work. These intense impressions of the open air were painted outdoors within the landscape, known as "en plein air" painting. He once had a trench dug so that a 2.5 meter high canvas could be raised and lowered. The artist, Gustave Courbet, visited Monet while he was working on this particular painting, Women in the Garden, 1867. Courbet remarked that Monet wouldn't even paint the leaves in the background unless the light conditions were right.

In 1883, Monet rented a home in Giverny and began to plant the gardens and lily ponds that would become the inspiration for his later work. By 1890, Claude Monet was successful enough to buy the home at Giverny. He continued to travel throughout Europe but his attention was increasingly focused on the water-garden he created at his home in Giverny. By 1899, his work was almost exclusively devoted to the atmospheric conditions reflected around water-lilies. A special studio was built in 1914 where Monet continued to develop this work on even larger canvases.

Time bears witness to Monet's ability to capture the luminous quality of light reflected among florals and water. A century later, the paintings of Claude Monet continue to captivate and impress.
