Don Li-Leger

Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, the contemporary painter Don Li-Leger started painting early in life. His first subjects were the native birds and animals of the Canadian West Coast.

After traveling around the world in 1971, he went on to study plant ecology at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. These studies would add to his already intimate knowledge of and sensitivity to nature. He had formal art training at the Vancouver School of Art, and in 1975 he went to the Banff School of Fine Art and studied painting with Terry Frost and illustration with Frank Beebe, a natural history artist. In 1977 he studied printmaking at Okanagan College in the BC interior, where he received a Canadian Nature Artist Scholarship Award. It was while living here that his paintings of birds and other pieces with a nature theme began to be sought after by collectors.

He would continue to paint and to make extensive field trips to Asia, as well as to wildlife sanctuaries throughout North America. These trips expanded his vision and enlarged the scope of his subject matter.

His tranquil and meditative paintings show a distinctly Eastern influence (Iris Nine Patch series, Summer Bloom, Oriental Blossoms series, Elegance series). He has said he desired to integrate the spontaneity and liveliness of Oriental brushwork that had long inspired and influenced him and he would use Chinese as well as Western bristle brushes, often layering transparent color or rice paper collage to achieve his desired effects.

As with much of his work, nature remains an underlying theme. In some paintings he uses calligraphy from ancient Chinese poetry, reflecting his deep interest Asian painting, travel, and philosophy.

Recently his work has taken a new departure, with figurative etchings and more improvisational mono-prints and paintings.

His work has been featured in exhibitions throughout North America, and he is represented in many private collections.

Don Li-Leger works from his British Columbia studio/home he shares with his wife, Cora, who is also an artist.
