Max Hayslette (1930 - )

The American artist Max Hayslette, who calls himself a romantic artist, was born in Rupert, West Virginia, in 1930. Hayslette has always sought to give his works a warm and gentle spiritual quality, and for him, the essence and spirituality of his subject are more important than detail. He says that he can grasp this spiritual essence more completely when his subject is illumined by the dawn twilight, halfway between light and dark. He succeeds masterfully in capturing the quiet beauty of the early morning.

"Painting is a silent medium," Hayslette says, "and well suited to exploring the ethereal qualities of early morning light, before the sounds of the day invade the scene. Painting is a process which is accomplished in silence, but when everything works right, it culminates in a triumphant symphony for the soul."

He says his images are the culmination of "a long dance between memory and imagination," and he infuses every new subject with a spirit of his own.

Hayslette started his formal art studies at the American Academy in 1947, one year after he held his first one-man show. He completed his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1952, where he worked closely with the Ukrainian Cubist Sculptor Alexander Archipenko and Austrian Sculptor Egon Weiner.

Hayslette's love of travel is second only to his love of art, and indeed many of his paintings record the many corners of the world he has visited (Sea View Villa, Provence by the Sea I & II, Notre Dame, Les Serigraphie de St Tropez).

Hayslette is represented in over three hundred private, corporate, and public collections. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States. He also had success in the field of exhibition and interior design, winning several awards for exhibition design in the mid-50s.

So taken was Hayslette by the architecture he saw in China and Japan, he designed a studio based on a Japanese pagoda. It is here he now lives and works, nestled among the trees in rural Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest.
