Home > Cheri Blum > See Cheri Blum Art Cheri Blum (1969 - 2003)Cheri Blum was a remarkably successful American artist. Until her untimely death in November 2003, she worked in her studio on the banks of the Sassafras River in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland in the United States. Her cottage studio, covered in climbing vines and morning glories, reflected her love of old, weathered things. With flowers spilling out of dilapidated wash basins and crab pots, and an interior furnished with an eclectic mix of antique shop finds, flea market treasures, and things found on walks along the beach, she cherished anything that had a feeling of age and history. Blum said she was "drawn to things that are old, have character and a sense of nostalgia," and her paintings are a perfect reflection of this sensibility. She began her career as an illustrator and muralist, working with faux painting, decorative furniture finishes, and trompe l'oeil. She also had a strong desire to bring art into everyday life — out of galleries and museums and into homes and offices. Blum was inspired by John LaFarge and William Morris, both successful industrial and home designers as well as great painters. Her artistic style, seen in such works as Day Lily Garden, Row of Red Amaryllis, and Chinoiserie I is characterized by calm, serene lines, simple shapes, and peaceful balance. Her paintings also take on the character of her beloved antiques. She perfected a method of painting on cracked linen that conjures up a sense of the past (Pale Pink Rose on Antique Linen). Interested in the effects of time and weather, Blum even went so far as to put a completed painting in the washing machine. She succeeded in her goal "to take the fine art aspect of the Old Masters and combine it with a worn, handcrafted look that suits today's styles." Each piece of her artwork pays homage to the beauty of time passing by, and yet feels fresh and ageless.
