Howard BehrensBorn in Chicago in 1933, the American painter, Howard Behrens, started to paint when he was 17. He received a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the University of Maryland in 1961, and then found work with the US Government Printing Office in Washington, DC, where he worked as chief artist. In 1980, he held his first one-man show in West Palm Beach, Florida, and established himself as a professional artist. Behrens had a strong passion to capture the essence of the places he visited, and discovered he could do this using a palette knife instead of a brush, for its boldness and control of color. Behrens wields the palette knife rapidly, applying many layers of deep, rich color. As a master of this technique, he has been described as "a poet sculpting paint on canvases that are alive with color." Behrens was influenced by Monet, Van Gogh, and Nicola Simbari, the Italian palette knife artist. He says of himself: "As an Expressionist, I paint fast while the passion for the painting is very strong. For me, the paint is the subject matter just as much as the image." His classical compositions add to his broad appeal. Behrens' paintings are testaments to his twin loves of travel and sunny, warm climates. He paints beautiful and romantic places, from the idyllic lakes of Italy (Splendor of Italy and Reflections of Lake Como) to the intimate gardens of the new world (Palm Beach Flower Garden). Behrens has had over 150 one-man shows across the United States since becoming a professional artist. His works have been on the covers of many art publications and he has been the featured subject of numerous magazines and newspapers. After visiting Giverny, France, last year, the artist created a "Tribute to Monet" series that was exhibited at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. The artist's works are owned by numerous collectors and are in the permanent collections of many museums. Behrens and his wife, Judi, continue to travel the world, with Behrens painting many of their favorite places in the warmth and ever-changing light of the sun. See
