Tadashi AsomaTadashi Asoma, the Japanese-American painter and printmaker, has had a successful career as an artist that spans four decades. His luminous and subtly colored landscape paintings capture vibrant yet transient moments in nature, highlighting its fragile beauty. Asoma was born in Japan, and in 1956, four years after his first exhibition in Tokyo, he was awarded a scholarship by the Japanese government to study in Paris. There he would absorb the first of the three main cultural influences on his style: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The Impressionist's love of color and the Post-Impressionist's fascination with pattern and graphic abstraction would deeply impress Asoma. These influences can be seen in such works as Afternoon Calm and Indian Summer. Three years after his studies in Paris, he would visit the United States, where he became intrigued with American contemporary art. He decided to settle permanently in the United States with his family. Asoma has a rare sensitivity to color and pattern, and he shows the beauty of simple natural phenomena, like the vibrant beginnings of autumn color in Noonday Dreams and the calm reflections in a lake in Daybreak. His exquisitely colored images of the American countryside have broad appeal (Reflections and Morning Light). Though French and American influences can clearly be seen in his work, his style most reflects his Japanese heritage. His asymmetry, abstraction, and cropped perspective recall Ukiyo-e woodblock prints (Lily Pond and Water Lilies). Asoma's work continues to attract new collectors just as it did during his first exhibit in Tokyo in 1952. He is well known to collectors of contemporary art, and he has had 23 solo exhibitions at the David Findlay Galleries in New York, the first in 1965, as well as extensive exhibits elsewhere in the US, and in Europe and Japan.
